This Valentine’s my husband and I decided that we would avoid the restaurant crowds and would cook homemade pizza instead!  We had a wonderful time.  I made the sauce while Adam made the dough.  We will probably do this again next year.

These sauce and dough recipes are my favorite!  We have used them many times.  You will have leftover pizza sauce, so you can save it and make pizza again in a few days!

Yummy Pizza Sauce Ingredients*

1 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 white onion & 1 clove garlic, chopped finely in a food processor
1 can (14-ounces) whole peeled tomatoes, in juice
2 fresh basil leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
salt and pepper to taste

Add the olive oil to a sauce pan and heat on medium high. Add the onions and garlic mixture and saute until slightly translucent.

Chop whole tomatoes with juice in food processor and add to onion mixture.

Add fresh basil, oregano, and salt & pepper to taste.

Simmer for at least 15 minutes.  While the sauce is simmering prepare your dough.

We thought that the sauce was too chunky, so we threw it back in the food processor.

Amazing Thin Crust Pizza*

1 yeast packet
1/4 teaspoon sugar
3/4 cup hot water
1 3/4 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

Dissolve yeast and sugar in hot water.

The mixture should get foamy.  Let sit for 8 minutes.

Meanwhile mix flour and salt in a large bowl.

Pour yeast mixture over flour mixture and mix well with a wooden spoon.

Turn onto floured surface and knead for 2 minutes.

Dust surface with flour and roll out.  This recipe makes two medium pizzas or one large one.  If making two pizzas like we did, divide dough in half before rolling out.

Cut a heart shape, if desired, using a butter knife.  Be sure to grease your pizza pan before transferring it over.  Add sauce to your pizza dough.  Make sure you don’t add too much or you will get a soggy pizza.

Other things you will need

Cooking spray
Various pizza toppings of your choosing
Finely shredded mozzarella–stay away from reduced fat, if you are counting calories just use less

Add your toppings evenly to avoid center loading your toppings.  Sprinkle mozzarella evenly over your toppings.

Bake at 500 degrees in the center of your oven for 8-12 minutes or until edges are golden.
