Materials:

Fabric
Velcro
Regular scissors
Clear vinyl
Bulldog clips
Double sided tape
Sewing machine
Basic sewing supplies

Velcro Pouch-02

Cut fabric and vinyl.  If you don’t have a rotary cutter, use regular scissors instead of fabric scissors to cut your vinyl.

Blue pouch dimensions: 12.5″ x 10.5″, lining 6.5″ x 8.5″
Purple pouch dimensions: 16.5″ x 8″, lining 8.5″ x 6″

Velcro Pouch-03

Line up lining fabric 1/2″ from the bottom and 1″ from each side.  Mark fabric with a pen or pencil.

Velcro Pouch-04

Fold over 1/2″ seam allowance and iron.

Velcro Pouch-05

Velcro Pouch-06

Tuck fabric lining and vinyl into the seam crease.

Velcro Pouch-07

It is hard to use pins on vinyl, so I use bulldog clips.

Velcro Pouch-08

Add enough bulldog clips to secure.

Velcro Pouch-09

Fold over and iron the seam allowance on the other side.

Velcro Pouch-11

Pin in place.

Velcro Pouch-10

Velcro Pouch-12

Sew 1/4″ from the edge.

Velcro Pouch-13

Add a second seam 1/4″ from the first.

Velcro Pouch-14

Only one stitch is necessary on the opposite side.

Velcro Pouch-15

Fold 1″ edge in half and iron.  Take care not to iron the vinyl as it will melt.

Velcro Pouch-16

Fold the edge fabric in half yet again.  Only iron the fabric far from the vinyl.

Velcro Pouch-17

Hold in place with bulldog clips on the vinyl and pins on a remaining fabric.

Velcro Pouch-18

Sew in place using the same double stitch you used before.  Repeat on the other side.

Velcro Pouch-19

Place velcro on pouch and stick to fabric using double sided tape.  Then stitch to fabric with your sewing machine.

Velcro Pouch-20

Fold up sides and stitch closed.

Velcro Pouch-21

Velcro Pouch-22

You can add a decorative stitch down the middle of the vinyl if you wish.  You will be sewing directly on the vinyl, so to prevent sticking you can use a teflon coated foot.  If you don’t have one, I’ve read online that you can put clear tape on the bottom of your regular foot and that it works just the same.  Good luck and have fun!

Side by Side Meat and Vegetarian Chili

Side by Side Vegetarian and Meat Chili-01

My husband makes a nice and spicy chili.  He makes meat chili for himself and vegetarian chili for me.  This is his technique for making side by side meat and vegetarian chili.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon+ olive oil, divided
1 white onion
4 cloves garlic
28 oz canned crushed tomatoes
pinto, black, and kidney beans, 12 oz each
jalapeno, serrano, habanero peppers, more or less to taste
salt and pepper to taste
3/4 lb beef
1 cup thawed fake ground beef. I prefer Quorn brand.

Side by Side Chili-02

Heat olive oil in a large pan.  You will be cooking the base of the chili together before separating it.

Side by Side Chili-01

Coarsely chop onion.

Side by Side Chili-03

Finely chop garlic.

Side by Side Chili-04

Add onion and garlic to heated pan.

Side by Side Chili-10

Cook until the onion sweats and becomes transparent.

Side by Side Chili-05

Add crushed tomatoes.

Side by Side Chili-09

Cover, bring to a boil and then reduce heat to a gentle simmer.

Side by Side Chili-07

Open canned beans and rinse well.

Side by Side Chili-06

Add beans to pan and stir well.

Side by Side Chili-13

Cut up peppers as thinly as possible, removing the pith as you go.  Leave in seeds if you like things spicy!

Side by Side Chili-12

Add peppers to pan.

Side by Side Chili-08

Stir well.  Add salt and pepper to taste. Cook until the peppers are soft, about 20 minutes.

Side by Side Chili-14

While chili base is cooking, heat about 1/2 tbsp oil on high in a small non-stick frying pan.

Side by Side Chili-11

Add beef and cook on high to get a nice brown color.  Your beef may turn grey instead of brown if cooked at a low temperature.

Chili Side by Side-04

Drain fat from beef if desired.  My husband didn’t end up draining his because he used a very lean beef.

Side by Side Chili-15

Divide the chili base into two sauce pans.

Chili Side by Side-03

This is my favorite brand of fake ground beef.

Side by Side Chili-17

Add thawed soy crumbles to one of the pans.

Side by Side Chili-16

Stir well and continue to cook for about 5 minutes.

Side by Side Chili-18

Add cooked beef to second pan and mix well.

Side by Side Chili-19

Cook for 5 minutes.

Chili Side by Side-01

Serve chili with rice and shredded cheese if desired.

Funny foam mustache-13

Cut out mustaches using die cutting machine (like a Cricut machine) or by tracing and cutting by hand.

Mustache-05

Place card stock on foam and trace with a ballpoint pen.  The pen will leave an indentation in the foam that’s easy to see.

Funny foam mustache-09

Cut out mustache using heavy duty scissors.

Funny foam mustache-06

Cut out the curl of the mustache using a craft knife.

Funny foam mustache-07

Use a craft knife to clean up the edges.

Funny foam mustache-14

Paint bamboo skewers with black craft of acrylic paint.  You may need to add multiple coats if your paint is thin.  I used two coats of thick acrylic paint.

Funny foam mustache-08

Place scrapbook paper face down on scrap paper.

Funny foam mustache-04

Spray with an even layer of spray adhesive.

Funny foam mustache-01

Carefully stick paper to the foam.

Funny foam mustache-11

You can add a glossy coating to the mustache if you wish.  You can also use Mod Podge if you don’t have gloss gel medium.

Funny foam mustache-03

While adding gloss, take care to even out streaks and brush marks.

Mustache-01

Set out to dry.

Funny foam mustache-02

You can avoid using messy glues by sticking the sharp end of the skewer into the foam.

Mustache-04

Decide which side of the mustache you’d like the stick to go into.  Put the skewer into the foam and twist back and forth until it’s firmly in place.
